September Rules!

5 Reasons September Is One of the Best Months in Southern Utah

Summer isn’t officially over yet, but September in Southern Utah feels like the beginning of something better.

The days are slowly getting shorter, temperatures begin trending down, football is back, and before long, the higher elevations will start showing signs of fall. Utah tourism officials actually list late August through mid-October as one of the state’s most pleasant weather periods. (Visit Utah)

Here are five reasons September might be one of the best months of the year to live in Southern Utah.

1. The Heat Finally Starts Losing

September can still be plenty hot in St. George, but we’re headed in the right direction. The average September high for southwestern Utah is around 93 degrees, compared with 102 in July. (Visit Utah)

Those cooler mornings and evenings make it much easier to get outside again.

2. Hiking Season Is Coming Back

After months of planning hikes around extreme summer temperatures, September begins opening the door to more comfortable outdoor adventures.

Snow Canyon, Red Cliffs, Pine Valley and the trails around Greater Zion are all waiting. Just remember that late summer and early fall can still bring thunderstorms and flash-flood danger, so always check conditions before heading into a canyon. (Visit Utah)

3. Fall Colors Aren’t Far Away

You don’t have to drive to northern Utah to see great fall colors.

Southern Utah has its own spectacular fall-color country around Cedar Breaks, Brian Head, State Route 143 and State Route 14. The area’s aspens and maples can turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange and red. (Visit Utah)

September is when it’s time to start watching the higher elevations.

4. Football Is Back

High school football, college football and the NFL are all back.

Whether you’re spending Friday night under the lights, Saturday watching college football or Sunday yelling at the television, September finally gives sports fans their weekends back.

5. Southern Utah’s Best Season Is Just Beginning

This might be the biggest reason of all.

September is the gateway to October and November — two months when Southern Utah really shines. Cooler temperatures mean hiking, biking, golfing, camping, scenic drives and evenings outside become much more inviting.

We survived another Southern Utah summer.

Now comes the reward.
