Follow these four simple no stress rules to get the most out of your grill:
Fire it up
Just like an oven, your grill needs time to preheat so that both the air and the grates are the same temperature. Turn it on 10 to 15 minutes before you start cooking to make sure it’s hot. Bonus this also kills any residual bacteria.
Get a fresh start
Fact: A hot grill is easier to clean. Once it is heated, use a wire brush to scrape the grates. Pro tip do this again once you’re done cooking to save your future self some scrubbing time. If you don’t have a wire brush, using tongs, scrape a crumpled ball of heavy-duty aluminum foil along the grates instead.
Grease those grates
Once your grill is hot and clean, give it a quick wipe with oil to help prevent food from sticking. Dip a wad of paper towels in canola oil, then hold it in tongs. This also ensures that you get those impressive looking grill marks.
Check the temperature
High heat is 400 degrees to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, medium is 300 degrees to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, and low is 250 degrees to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Don’t have a grill thermometer? Simply place your open palm 5 inches above the grates. If you have to pull your hand away after just 2 seconds, it’s high, 5 seconds for medium, and 10 seconds for low.
